Secret Santa Night & Prize Presentation

A short ride up to Fineshade before the party & prize presentation ensured that everyone was hungry for festive food.

Appropriately decorated helmets were the order of the night with reindeer antlers being the common theme although Ben’s flashing fairy lights didn’t have the same effect indoors when it came to the judging. Local junior riders Keira McVitty & Jenny McAndrew were the jury & deemed Jerry Norman to be the winner with his toilet roll fashioned antlers.

The final presentations were for the Kings Cliffe Flyers Go-Ride Racing Series in which all three places overall were awarded to KCF riders &  the King Cliffe Flyers Youth Champion 2013

Go-Ride Racing – Results update

The same number of points have been available in each round for each group but even so there has been a clear overall winner in each round. This, coupled with breaks for holidays, has kept the competition for the overall series win wide open. In previous rounds the riders have done cross country MTB type races & last night saw them emulate the velodrome stars with individual Time Trials, Keirins (paced by Mark Tilley), Handicaps, Scratch Races & an Elimination race The next & final round will be on Thursday 26th September – Bring your lights!

Kings Cliffe Flyers Go-Ride Racing Series – Round 1
A great turnout for the first bitterly cold & wet round of the 2013 series.  Multiple scratch races, an Elimination race, time trials & a handicap race ensured they were kept warm & busy. The Flyers Fledglings (under 8s) showed everyone exactly what great racing is about & demanded ‘proper length’ races & lots of them too.

In the older categories Jerry Norman won the overall competition, 2nd-Ben Lewis, 3rd Harry Tilley. Arthur Brown, Oliver Tilley & Oliver Stegeman were the younger winners.

Alconbury Airfield – Tuesday night was race night for the riders who had taken part in the closed road & time trial coaching sessions during the last  previous few weeks. In an omnium format the riders completed a 15 mins circuit race, time trial & handicap circuit race. Jerry Norman was the only Flyer represented & his efforts were rewarded with a medal & SKY Pro cycling goodies.

Fenland Grass Track  A contingent of more experienced riders from Spalding CC were at this Go-Ride Racing event in Bretton, Peterborough last Friday & once again Jerry was the only representative from the Flyers.  Despite the freezing cold & drizzle everyone stayed upright as they whizzed around the oval grass track. Go-Ride Racing Series 2012

Thirty four children aged 8-16yrs took part in the series this year tackling a variety of races in the style of cyclo-cross, track, MTB and road racing.

Each event the racing became more competitive & tactical as riders became more accustomed to putting into practice the skills they had learnt during the weekly coaching sessions.  There was great rivalry too between the other local Go-Ride clubs, Fenland Clarion & Peterborough CC  as each club battled for the top spot.

In the final week no shows by series leader Sam Hughes & second placed Issac Ellard left the door wide open & competition fiercer than ever.  Unfortunately contender Billy Slater was unable to take advantage of this opportunity due to a broken arm.

Opening his account for the evening Thomas Spain, with bike lights blazing in the darkness, scored victory in the first scratch race with Jerry Norman hot on his wheels & youngster Harry Tilley not far behind.  The same riders featured through the evening with the Brown brothers, Louis & William picking up some points too although Louis put these at risk when he received an official warning from the judge. Flyer Jack Shuttleworth seized the opportunity in the handicap race to produce his best performance yet & take the win. The overall evening results were 1st Thomas Spain, 2nd Jerry Norman, 3rd Harry Tilley.

Then it was trophy time as the final series points were allocated. Trophies were awarded to the first girl overall, Holly Farrow & top three overall, 1st Thomas Spain 34 points & 2nd Sam Hughes 26 points. There was a tie on points for third place but based on the highest scoring rider on the last night  Harry Tilley 25 points was awarded third place. There were also perpetual trophies awarded for the highest placed King Cliffe Flyers boy & girl riders.

Next year we hope to open up the competition to our Fledgling Flyers (5yrs+). Watch this space.

Tour of Britain 2012 – Youth Team Report & Photos

The Kings Cliffe Flyers youth team, consisting of Meg Snow, Oliver Fraser, Thomas Stegman & Jerry Norman, experienced what it was like to be a pro cyclist at the Tour of Britiain when they competed against other regional teams along the finishing straight of Stage 1 at the Norwich Showground.

The noise level & amount of support was unprecedented as cycling fans several deep against the barriers cheered on the youngsters, banged on the boards & waved flags as the teams raced hard against each other. As the pressure mounted there were the inevitable spills, just like the pros, with most teams coming unstuck at some point including our own team. We have a hard bunch of riders who like the pros remained unflustered, regrouped into their formation & carried on as they’d practised to finish well. Some other teams were given a restart & this unfortunately probably cost our riders the chance of a bronze medal ride off so they had to settle for 5th place overall. Wait until next year!

Kings Cliffe Flyers Youth Team at Tour of Britain – Sunday 9-Sep

This weekend sees the start of the prestigious Tour of Britain with stage one departing from Ipswich & finishing in Norwich.  Many of the pros, including Bradley Wiggins, Mark Cavendish, Ivan Basso, Tyler Farrar,  Jack Bobridge & Samuel Sanchez, are now using this event as preparation for the World Championships. However, the highlight of the day will actually be just prior to the arrival of the pros when youth teams from the Region’s Go-Ride clubs take part in racing along the finishing straight in front of the crowds, V.I.P.s and commentary boxes.

The Kings Cliffe Flyers youth team, consisting of Meg Snow, Oliver Fraser, Thomas Stegman & Jerry Norman, have practised hard this week perfecting fast starts, tight turns whilst maintaining a tight formation to complete the Italian Pursuit with each timed attempt getting slightly faster.  They will only get one opportunity on the day to make it through to the medal ride offs so if you’re going to watch the event make sure you bang on the boards encouraging them to a win.

Apart from the Flyers, Wiggins & Cavendish look out local lad & GB’s rider number 165, Alistair Slater, who is a former Go-Ride participant of Bourne Wheelers.

 You can watch the T.o.B. on ITV 4 –  Live – 13:45hrs ; Highlights – 20:00hrs

RESULTS – 30-Aug – Go-Ride Racing Series

It felt as if summer had long gone when the riders faced up to an additional challenge as the strong cold winds blew across the Kings Cliffe Active site last night.

The first massed start event rocketed out of the car park with riders ascending the grassy slope up to the top field before circulating the perimeter followed by a narrow technical & twisty section before the finish.  A convincing win by the current series leader, Issac Ellard (Kings Cliffe Flyers),was soon followed by Ieuan Williams (Fenland Clarion) and last week’s newcomer Oliver Claypole. The two of them soon turned the tables on Issac with them battling it out for the top spot in the subsequent races with Ieuan scoring one win and Oliver three wins in their group. Newcomer to racing, Ellen Ellard stepped up to the mark leaving some of the boys in her wake as she took two fourth places just missing out on the points.

Overall winner of the evening, Sam Hughes, placed fourth in the mass start event for all riders & subsequently scored victory in every race in his group. Tussling behind him & absolutely charging along were Harry Tilley (KCF) & Edward Lowe (Fenland Clarion). These two riders were pulled up by the chief judge after their first group race ‘due to straying off the technical course’ with some advice given about slowing down for the technical corners & a warning that a repeat woud result in disqualification. William Brown (KCF) placed fourth several times  & is just waiting to break into the top three.

Only two more rounds remain on 27-Sep & 25 Oct. Next week coaching resumes & as usual there will be mini races & challenges.
