Fenland Clarion Floodlit cross races 8th November 2013 results
Despite an absolute downpour just an hour before the start threatening to spoil the evening’s races seventeen riders took to the startline in the first of these cyclocross events organised by Fenland Clarion. With the ground still soft on top and most definitely wet the conditions were going to test the young riders along with the challenges of the course. The riders were split into three age groups, and it was the eights and under who got the evening under way with a victory in the one lap event for Rhys Burton from St.Ives C.C. with Jessica Lea taking second ahead of three Fenland riders in Jack Ray, Joel Coulson, and Charlotte Bullard as well as her brother Daniel. With a host of nine year old riders they got their own age group to ride in, and it started with a win for Harry Tilley from Kings Cliffe Flyers ahead of clubmate Jensen Barraclough with the ever competitive Bourne Wheeler Harry Garfield taking third. In the tens and over it started with a one two for the host clubs Ieuan Williams ahead of Georgia Bullard with Elizabeth McLoughlin of Witham Wheelers holding off the challenge of Fenlands Abigail Cameron.

Don’t worry if you don’t have a cyclo-cross bike because you can use a mountain bike instead. Fenland Clarion are organising two evenings of cyclo-cross style racing as Go ride racing events for riders under 16 years of age. It would be great to see a load of Flyers racing at these events especially as the course is relatively easy compared to the ones in the Kings Cliffe series this year as it’s much less bumpy & there aren’t any big drags to climb. (Alison is setting up their course & helping them to run the event so you should get loads of racesJ)
Friday 8th November – TOMORROW!
Friday 13th December
Embankment Athletic Track, Bishops Road, Peterborough PE1 5BW
Registration will be from 6.00pm with racing to start at 6.30pm, and should be finished by 8.00pm. Each rider will get at least two races and events will be held in age groups.
Parking is in the regional pool car park, which is free in the evenings, although please check. The entrance to the track is via the far corner of the car park. We have excellent changing facilities and refreshments will be available in the nice warm pavillion with spectators very welcome. Each evening will cost £4 per rider and we aim to cater for riders of all abilities, so if you have any novices this could be a good event to start their racing. The venue has floodlights, but if riders would feel more comfortable with their own lights then obviously you can still use them.

from Kings Cliffe Active up in to Fineshade had 11 riders consisting of four adults & seven children aged 7-13yrs. As with all first trips out when the nights draw in everyone suddenly realises that they can’t remember when they last charged their light batteries & wonder if they’ll get caught out. Well, it didn’t matter because we had so many lights that if one had gone off we wouldn’t have known.
The route consisted of fireroads, all of the skills sections along with some other off piste sections whenever possible. A great night out in the the late summer warmth.
It’ll be a different tonight now that the weather has turned so if you’re coming along, WRAP UP!
When? & Where? details in previous post.
Social off-road ride into Fineshade for all ages although primarily for the u16s now that there is a break in the coaching sessions. LIGHTS ESSENTIAL. All riders must carry a spare inner tube suitable for their bike if not using tubeless tyres. Younger riders must be accompanied by an adult.
NEED LIGHTS???? Check out CREE XML 1200 or 1600 lumens. They are lightweight, rechargeable, excellent value & will provide amazing light. Prices vary around £17 but check out the different packages as some come with a back light & helmet fitting too. Remember to check the battery capacity as a 6400mAh will last longer than 4400mAh.
Depart 6.30pm PROMPT from the Kings Cliffe Active car park, PE8 6YH. We will go out of the top gate into Willow Lane & up to the big tree then into Fineshade. The technical skills sections are optional. Ride duration approx. 1.5hrs. Make sure you bring drink.
